The Consulate of the Republic of Cyprus in Faro was inaugurated on May 20, 2016, by the Ambassador of Cyprus Thalia Petrides and the Honorary Consul José Marques da Silva.
The Consulate is situated in the city of Faro at the HQ of the company MSCAR owned by Mr. Marques da Silva, who is a well-known and highly respected personality in the business community and patron of culture and arts in the Algarve region.
At the inauguration ceremony, which took place in the Palácio Estoi, Ambassador Thalia Petrides in her speech outlined the common characteristics of Cyprus and the Algarve, emphasizing in particular the kindness and hospitality of the people, the clear blue sea, the beautiful beaches and the rich gastronomic variety. As tourism is an important source of income for both Cyprus and Algarve, the Ambassador expressed the hope that the new Consulate will generate an increased interest for tourist exchanges and foster business opportunities. She also expressed the certainty that the Honorary Consul Mr. Marques da Silva will contribute immensely to making Cyprus better known in the Algarve region.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by personalities from the business community of the region, the local administrative and military authorities, the Mayor of Faro, personalities of art and culture, honorary consuls from other countries and diplomats. During the reception that followed the inauguration, the guests had the opportunity to taste original products from Cyprus and wines.
